Tiffany Foundation Award for the Preservation of Japanese Traditional Arts and Culture in Contemporary Society

August 19, 2010

Seminar: "Toward Community Revitalization: New Possibilities for Traditional Culture"

In 2007, JCIE and the Tiffany & Co. Foundation established The Tiffany Foundation Award for the Preservation of Japanese Traditional Arts and Culture in Contemporary Society, to recognize Japanese organizations that are revitalizing their communities through the preservation and promotion of traditional arts and culture. The third round of awardees was announced in June 2010. In order to more fully examine the progress and impact of the program, JCIE organized the seminar "Toward Community Revitalization: New Possibilities for Traditional Culture" on August 19, 2010, at Baiso-in Temple in Tokyo. Nearly 100 participants joined the seminar, which convened Tiffany Award selection committee panelists, specialists, and former awardees to discuss the present state of Japanese traditional culture and efforts at revitalization, and to further dialogue on the emerging and potential role of traditional culture as a tool to support civic engagement and the revitalization of local communities.
