Challenges in Global Health: New Opportunities for the Private Sector

Leading members of the corporate, philanthropic, and health sectors gathered in Tokyo on July 27, 2010, for a JCIE symposium entitled “Challenges in Global Health: New Opportunities for the Private Sector.” Primarily targeting corporate executives in Japan, the discussion at the day-long symposium was aimed at exploring ways for Japanese corporations to play a key role in addressing global health challenges by effectively enhancing their own potential to engage with international organizations working in the field.

Prominent global health experts in Japan made brief remarks on the state of global health and Japan’s growing role in the field. Following their remarks, representatives from four major international organizations—the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria; the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization; the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition; and the Drugs for Neglected Diseases initiative—introduced their organizations’ goals and approaches, provided examples of ongoing partnerships with the private sector, and suggested other forms of partnership that companies might consider. In the afternoon, panelists from a broad range of Japanese companies—from pharmaceutical and chemical companies to an investment firm—shared their own experiences partnering with international organizations in the global health field, with a focus on why companies engaged, how they made the decision to enter into a partnership, and the impact the partnerships have had on their companies. Representatives from more than 70 companies in Japan gained exposure to the many opportunities for partnership in the global health field through their participation in the symposium.
