JCIE is involved in organizing a wide range of events and activities during the Seventh Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD7) that bring together top leaders from around the world to focus on ways of advancing global health. Launched by the Japanese Government in 1993, TICAD convenes African and Japanese heads of state along with representatives from international organizations, partner countries, civil society, and the private sector in a high-level forum to discuss how Japanese partnerships can support sustainable economic growth and development in Africa. Held every three years, TICAD7 will take place on August 28–30 in Yokohama, Japan, with the theme “Advancing African Development through People, Technology, and Innovation.”

JCIE will co-organize three official side events during TICAD7, building on the momentum of the week to advance policy dialogue around key global health issues such as sustainable financing of universal health coverage (UHC), the challenges of aging in Africa, and the health worker shortage that remains a major bottleneck to UHC and economic growth. On Saturday, August 31, JCIE and its Friends of the Global Fund, Japan are partnering with IntraHealth International and The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (The Global Fund) to hold SwitchPoint Shibuya, a networking conference organized in partnership with TICAD7 with a focus on global health innovation.

JCIE will also hold two high-level roundtables with Japanese legislators and is supporting a number of other activities during the week of TICAD7
