On Tuesday October 25, 2011, China Central Television (CCTV) news anchor and UNAIDS goodwill ambassador James Chau spoke at the Nippon Press Club about how health journalism and the media can contribute to the field of global health and the promotion of health issues, particularly in HIV/AIDS awareness and response. He also spoke about the stigmas and discrimination that persist against people living with HIV/AIDS in their homes and workplaces, and about the measures that China has recently been taking to scale up its response to HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

The Global Fund initiated a joint project with Magnum Photos in 2007 to document the impact of antiretroviral treatment on the lives of people living with AIDS around the world. An international team of photographers traveled to nine countries to document the transformative effects that AIDS treatment has had on 33 individuals and their families. The Tokyo exhibition was launched on September 3, 2010, with a speech by Prime Minister Naoto Kan and an opening panel discussion. In conjunction with the exhibit, the FGFJ is organizing a series of public lectures with global health leaders. Read more

Public Seminar: “Okinawa, Toyako, and Beyond: Progress on Health and Development”

On February 26, 2010, the FGFJ organized a public seminar featuring Prof. Michel Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. Professor Kazatchkine remarked on the close relationship between the Global Fund and Japan, and expressed appreciation for the strong support given by Japan to the creation and subsequent activities of the Global Fund. He then proceeded to give a presentation on the rapid increase in funding worldwide, including creation of innovative mechanisms and greater attention paid to global health with the Okinawa summit of 2000 being the turning point. Working for an International Organization in Public Private Partnership

The FGFJ held a seminar in Tokyo on June 23, 2009, to increase understanding of the activities and role of the Global Fund, and to share information with Japanese professionals about career possibilities within the Global Fund. The public seminar, titled Working for an International Organization in Public Private Partnership, targeted young and mid-career professionals interested in working for international organizations. There were over 100 participants from the NPO, corporate, government, and university sectors at the event, which featured a presentation by Birgit Poniatowski, acting manager for board relations at the Global Fund, and remarks by Professor Atsuko Aoyama from the Department of International Health of Nagoya University and Masaki Inaba, program director for global health at the Africa Japan Forum. The seminar was cosponsored by the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Global Fund.

Media Trip to Cambodia and Vietnam on Global Health Cooperation

From April 21 to 25, 2008, the FGFJ and the Global Fund led a delegation of five Japanese journalists from major national newspapers to Cambodia and Vietnam. The journalists, who were covering health topics in the lead up to the G8 Summit in Toyako, Hokkaido, visited a broad range of sites so that they could better understand the public health problems these countries face and the efforts on the ground to improve the situation. They were able to witness projects providing treatment and prevention services for people affected by HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, and malaria, as well as those providing immunizations and mother and child healthcare.

In the lead up to two major summits being held in Japan in 2008— the Group of Eight (G8) Summit in Toyako, Hokkaido, and the Fourth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD IV), the FGFJ held a public seminar in Tokyo on July 26, 2007, on the topic From Heiligendamm to Toyako—The Global Fund on the G8 Agenda. Dr. Michel Kazatchkine, executive director of the Global Fund, and Dr. Christoph Benn, the Global Fund’s director of external relations, offered the audience an overview of the Global Fund’s work and its results so far and appealed to Japan to make sure that the momentum that started in Okinawa eight years ago is not lost over the coming years.

Global Fund featured on ANA flights (Sept-Dec 2006)

Wingspan highlights Global Fund activities with the motto "For these smiling faces—the Global Fund."

The FGFJ arranged for All Nippon Airways (ANA), one of Japan's two major carriers, to air a video on the Global Fund on all of its domestic flights for three months, from September to December 2006. ANA's in-flight magazine, Wingspan, which is distributed on all domestic and international flights, simultaneously ran a two-page spread on the Global Fund.

This Japanese language report periodically updates leaders, experts, and activists throughout Japan on new developments related to the Global Fund and the fight against communicable diseases.

FGFJ Japanese Language Website

The FGFJ's Japanese language website is the only media in Japanese to give a comprehensive explanation of the Global Fund, providing important and timely materials on Global Fund efforts and sharing information on FGFJ activities with a wide Japanese audience. The English website promotes regional cooperation in the fight against communicable diseases in East Asia.

Translation of Global Fund Materials

Global Fund brochures and materials on related initiatives are translated into Japanese by the FGFJ for circulation to a wide range of Japanese leaders from various sectors of society.
