Satoko Itoh, Managing Director and Chief Program Officer, Civilnet Program

After several years in the private sector, Satoko Itoh joined JCIE in 1988, where she oversees a wide range of programs in the areas of global health, civil society, and philanthropy. She is currently responsible for the management of the Friends of the Global Fund, Japan (FGFJ), a private support group created in 2004 to mobilize diverse sectors of society to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. In this role, she has given numerous presentations and written extensively in Japanese and English about stimulating private sector involvement in responding to these deadly diseases.

From 1997 until 2004, she was responsible for administering the Levi Strauss Foundation's Donor Advised Fund, the first such grant program in Japan created on behalf of an overseas corporate foundation. This provided funds to Japanese nonprofit organizations for activities in the field of HIV/AIDS, economic empowerment, and social justice. She has since helped launch and facilitate a number of other corporate giving programs, encouraging the Japanese private sector to become actively engaged in philanthropic activities. As part of her efforts to strengthen the infrastructure of Japan's nonprofit sector, she has also served as proposal reviewer for several giving programs, including "Give One," one of the major online giving site in Japan, and the Kanagawa Community Fund for Children.

Ms. Itoh received her B.A. from Keio University and M.A. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London.
