US-Japan Young Political Leaders 32nd Delegation to Japan (2016)

Tokyo / Kochi / Gifu

December 3–15, 2016

As part of the 2016 exchange program, a bipartisan delegation of six local-level legislators and political leaders from the United States are visiting Tokyo, Kochi Prefecture, and Gifu Prefecture for a series of meetings and roundtables. Over the course of their visit, they will meet with emerging and senior Diet members from both major parties, prefectural and city assembly members, and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the US Embassy, as well as policy experts and NGO leaders.

While in Tokyo, the delegation will be briefed on a variety of issues, ranging from Japanese security and geopolitical risks to the current state of US-Japan relations in light of the recent US presidential election. They will also participate in a public, off-the-record seminar on the policy implications of the new Trump administration. Outside of Tokyo, the delegation will meet with the governor of Kochi Prefecture and visit the Gifu Air Base of Japanese Air Self Defense Force in addition to visiting local cultural sites, schools, and government offices.

This program is organized in cooperation with the American Council of Young Political Leaders (ACYPL), and with the kind assistance of Japanese program alumni who have visited the US on this program.
