International Comparative Study on Governance and Civil Society
This project is a sequel to JCIE's pioneering study on the role of civil society in Japan, titled "Governance and Civil Society in Japan," the findings of which were published in English and Japanese as Deciding the Public Good: Governance and Civil Society in Japan (JCIE, 1999).
An international team of researchers was assembled to compare the diverse dimensions of the intricate relationship between civil society and governance in eight countries around the world, with the goal of futher stimulating debate in Japan and in other countries on the changing role of civil society. Under the direction of Tadashi Yamamoto, authors from each country explored how civil society in their country responds to new challenges to governance, its comparative advantages and limitations, its interaction with sectors such as bureaucracy and the corporate community, and how various historical, cultural, geographical, or other national characteristics affect the actual and potential role played by civil society.
The study results were published in the volume listed below.
