China Institute of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR)

History:
ICIR was established in 1960 through an initiative by Mao Zedong and Zhou Enlai as an institution to provide the government with policy studies. During the Cultural Revolution the institute was closed, but it resumed activities in 1980

Objectives:
CICIR is a comprehensive research institution covering strategic, international, and economic issues.

Geographic Focus:
CICIR focuses on Japan, the United States, Asia Pacific, Europe, and Africa. The Asia Pacific region is dealt with by related regional divisions such as North East Asia (Japan, Koreas), the United States and Canada, and South and Southeast Asia.

Periodicals:
Contemporary International Relations (monthly; both Chinese and English versions)

Major Activities:
CICIR is one of the most active government think tanks. Most of the research topics are decided by the institute itself, but as a government think tank, the institute conducts research and provides reference materials under requests from various ministries.
